Definition of a force

A push or pull on an object due to interaction with another

Properties all forces have

Magnitude and direction (vector quantity)

Unit of measurement for force

Newtons

Definition of contact forces

Forces where two objects are physically touching

Examples of contact forces

Tension, friction, air resistance

Direction of air resistance on a falling skydiver

Upwards

Definition of non-contact forces

Forces where two objects are physically separated

Examples of non-contact forces

Gravitational, electrostatic, magnetic

Electrostatic force between opposite charges

Attraction

Electrostatic force between same charges

Repulsion

Direction of normal contact force relative to contact

Opposite direction, normal to planes of contact

Cause of friction

Surfaces and their roughness when moved in contact
