Racial harmony (Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies B): Revision Notes
Racial harmony
What is racial harmony?
Racial harmony occurs when people of all races live together peacefully and respectfully. Within Catholic teaching, racism is fundamentally wrong because it contradicts the core Christian belief that all human beings are created equal in God's image.
The Catholic Church teaches that racism directly opposes fundamental Christian beliefs about human dignity and equality before God.
Catholic teachings on racial equality
The Catholic Church has strong theological foundations for promoting racial harmony, based on scripture and Christian tradition:
All humans share equal dignity
The foundation of Catholic teaching on race comes from St Paul's letter to the Galatians: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). This passage emphasises that racial, social, and gender differences become irrelevant in God's eyes - all people share the same fundamental dignity and worth.
This biblical passage was revolutionary for its time, as it challenged the social hierarchies and divisions that were considered normal in ancient society.
Jesus' example of love across racial boundaries
Jesus demonstrated radical love that crossed racial and cultural divides. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10), Jesus showed that we should help others regardless of their race or faith background.
Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan
This story was particularly powerful because Samaritans and Jews were traditionally hostile towards each other, yet Jesus made the Samaritan the hero of the story. By choosing a despised Samaritan as the example of godly behaviour, Jesus challenged racial prejudice and showed that goodness transcends racial boundaries.
The commandment to love others
Jesus taught his followers a new way of living through two key teachings that form the foundation for racial harmony:
Jesus' Core Teachings on Love:
- "A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (John 13:34)
- "Do to others as you would have them do to you" (Luke 6:31)
These teachings form the basis for treating all people with respect and kindness, regardless of their background.
The unity of humanity
St Paul taught that "From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth" (Acts 17:26). This scriptural teaching emphasises that all races and peoples share common origins and are part of God's single human family.
Putting faith into action
Catholics believe that these teachings must be lived out practically in daily life. Simply believing in equality isn't enough - Christians are called to actively work towards creating a more just and harmonious society for people of all backgrounds.
Catholic social teaching emphasises that faith without action is incomplete. Believers must translate their convictions into concrete efforts for justice and equality.
Why the Catholic Church promotes racial harmony
The Catholic Church has several characteristics that naturally support racial diversity and harmony:
Global and diverse membership
The Catholic Church is truly universal, with members from every continent and ethnic group. This diversity reflects the Church's mission to welcome people from all nations and backgrounds into the Christian community.
Inclusive leadership
Catholic leadership includes people from many different ethnic backgrounds, demonstrating that the Church values contributions from all races and cultures.
Following Jesus' example
Catholics look to Jesus as their model for behaviour. Historical accounts show Jesus treating people of different races equally - for example, he healed a Roman soldier's servant (Luke 7) and spoke respectfully to a Samaritan woman (John 4). These actions would have been controversial at the time but demonstrated God's love for all people.
Benefits of living in a multi-ethnic society
When different races and cultures live together harmoniously, society experiences numerous advantages:
Key Benefits of Multi-Ethnic Communities:
- Cultural enrichment: Multi-ethnic communities encourage racial harmony by helping people from different backgrounds understand and appreciate each other's traditions and perspectives
- Better communication and understanding: Living alongside people from various cultures naturally improves tolerance and breaks down prejudices and misconceptions
- Protection for Christians: In diverse societies, Christians often face less discrimination because mutual respect becomes the norm for all religious and ethnic groups
- Cultural variety: Multi-ethnic communities enjoy access to diverse music, food, clothing, and cultural expressions that enrich everyone's experience of life
- Fresh perspectives and learning: Catholics can learn from people with different cultural backgrounds and faith experiences, whilst also sharing their own beliefs and traditions
- Freedom of belief: In truly diverse communities, all believers have the opportunity to explore and practice their faith without fear of persecution
How Catholics work practically for racial harmony
The Catholic Church and individual Catholics take concrete action to promote racial equality:
Leadership and advocacy
Catholic leaders at local and international levels work actively to promote unity between all races. They speak out against racism and advocate for policies that ensure equal treatment for everyone.
Welcoming church communities
Catholic parishes strive to be inclusive communities that welcome believers from all racial backgrounds. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that "In the Church, God is 'calling together' his people from all the ends of the earth" (CCC 751), emphasising this universal mission.
Education and awareness
The Church educates its members about equality, tolerance, and understanding. This includes teaching about the dignity of all human beings and challenging prejudiced attitudes wherever they exist.
Prayer and support
Catholics pray regularly for those who experience persecution or unfair treatment because of their race. This spiritual support is accompanied by practical help where possible.
Organised action through CARJ
Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ)
The Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ) is a specific organisation that works to break down barriers between different races. CARJ promotes understanding, challenges discrimination, and supports victims of racial prejudice through practical programmes and advocacy work.
