Purpose and Characteristics of Embedded Systems
- An embedded system is a computer system built into a larger device to control specific functions.
- It consists of both hardware and software, which is often called firmware.
- Embedded systems are designed for specific tasks, unlike general-purpose computers.
- They usually don't have a full operating system and instead use simple control software.
- Embedded systems are optimised for reliability, efficiency, and low power consumption.
Examples of Embedded Systems
- Dishwasher – controls wash cycles and temperature.
- Microwave – manages cooking time and power levels.
- Fridge – regulates temperature and cooling systems.
- Smartphone – contains several embedded systems like GPS, camera, and sensors.
- Television – controls picture processing and display functions.
