Conservation of momentum principle

In a closed system: total momentum before = total momentum after

System where momentum is conserved

Closed system

Momentum of stationary object

Zero

Total momentum before (one ball at vv, one still)

mvmv

Momentum before: moving + stationary ball formula

(mimesv)+(mimes0)(m imes v) + (m imes 0)

Total momentum after collision

Remains mvmv (same as before)

What happens to initially stationary ball after collision?

Gains velocity and momentum

What happens to moving ball's velocity after collision?

Reduced velocity

Sum of both balls' momentum: after vs before

Equal (momentum conserved)
