What is GNI?

Total income earned from domestic & international sources in a country

GNI per Capita definition

Average income per person (GNI ÷ population)

Limitation of GNI per Capita

Doesn't show income distribution or access to services

What does HDI measure?

People's quality of life in a country

Four HDI indicators

Life expectancy, education, GNI per capita, gender equality

HDI score range

0 to 1 (higher scores = better development)

Developed countries features

High incomes, good healthcare & education, high life expectancy

Examples of developed countries

USA, Western Europe

Examples of quickly developing countries

Brazil, Russia, India, China

Slowly developing countries characteristics

Poorest countries, mostly in Africa, depend on agriculture

Colonialism impact on wealth

Wealth in colonial powers, poverty in colonies

Cash crops in unfair trade

Coffee & cotton - sold cheaply to developed countries

Debt impact on developing countries

Money spent on repayment, not healthcare/education

War's effect on economy

Destroys infrastructure & disrupts economic activities

Environment factor in development

Extreme climates & climate change make agriculture challenging
