The Cell (Junior Cert Science): Model Answers
Identifying Cell Structures: Plant and Animal Cells

Sample Answer
Question 1
Part (a)
Answer
For the onion (plant) cells: An arrow should be drawn from the letter N to a nucleus visible in one of the rectangular cells. The nuclei in onion cells appear as darker round or oval structures often positioned against the cell wall.
For the human cheek (animal) cells: An arrow should be drawn from the letter N to a nucleus visible in one of the irregularly-shaped cells. The nuclei in cheek cells appear as darker round structures within the pink-stained cytoplasm.
[6/6 Marks] This answer would receive full marks because it correctly identifies where the arrows should point - to the nuclei in both cell types (3 marks for each correct arrow as shown in the marking scheme).
Part (b)
Answer
The completed table should be:
| Description of cell part | Name |
|---|---|
| Controls the movement of substances in and out of cells | Cell membrane |
| Found in plant cells only | Cell wall |
| All of the material inside a cell, except for the nucleus | Cytoplasm |
[9/9 Marks] This answer would receive full marks because it correctly matches all three cell parts with their descriptions:
- Cell membrane controls movement of substances (3 marks)
- Cell wall is found only in plant cells (3 marks)
- Cytoplasm is all material inside the cell except the nucleus (3 marks)
The marking scheme shows this as 5+2(2) marks, indicating 5 marks for the main answer plus 2 marks for each of two components, totaling 9 marks.
