Functions of the Lymphatic System
The Functions of the Lymphatic System
- To collect tissue fluid and return it to the blood.
- To defend the body against infection by:
- Filtering foreign cells in lymph nodes.
- Maturing and storing lymphocytes.
- Destroying micro-organisms by engulfing them or by producing antibodies.
- To absorb and transport fatty acids and glycerol. Lymph vessels branch into lacteals that absorb these nutrients in the small intestine.
- To help with hearing and balance (the inner ear contains lymph).
