Show

Formula: percentage yield

Actual massTheoretical mass×100%\frac{\text{Actual mass}}{\text{Theoretical mass}} \times 100\%

Theoretical yield

Max amount of product if reaction is 100% efficient

Actual yield

Amount of product really obtained from reaction

Effect of catalysts on yield

No effect on yield, only increase rate to reach equilibrium

Removing product effect on equilibrium

Shifts equilibrium right, favours forward reaction

What does the Haber process produce?

Ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen gases

What does the contact process produce?

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4\text{H}_2\text{SO}_4)

Limiting reactant

Reactant that runs out first, limiting product formation

Formula: per cent purity

Mass of productTotal mass×100%\frac{\text{Mass of product}}{\text{Total mass}} \times 100\%

Exothermic reactions: temp effect on yield

Lower temperature favours forward reaction, increases yield
