PES definition

Responsiveness of quantity supplied to price changes

PES formula

% change in Qs% change in P\frac{\% \text{ change in Qs}}{\% \text{ change in P}}

Relatively elastic supply (PES value)

PES>1PES > 1 (Qs changes more than price)

Relatively inelastic supply (PES value)

PES<1PES < 1 (Qs changes less than price)

Unit elastic supply (PES value)

PES=1PES = 1 (Qs and price change by same %)

Perfectly elastic supply curve shape

Horizontal - infinite quantity supplied at one price

Perfectly inelastic supply curve shape

Vertical - fixed quantity regardless of price

Most important factor affecting PES

Time - longer time periods make supply more elastic

How storage ability affects PES

Easier storage makes supply more elastic

How excess capacity affects PES

More spare capacity makes supply more elastic
