What is the purpose of normal hypothesis testing?

To determine if a population parameter differs from a hypothesised value

When is normal hypothesis testing particularly useful?

Large sample sizes where Central Limit Theorem applies

What is the null hypothesis H0H_0?

The assumption that there is no effect or no difference

What is the alternative hypothesis H1H_1?

The assumption that there is an effect or a difference

What does the significance level α\alpha mean?

Probability of rejecting H0H_0 when it is actually true

What are common significance level values?

0.05 (5%) or 0.01 (1%)

What is a p-value?

Probability of obtaining a result at least as extreme as observed, assuming H0H_0 is true

What is a critical value?

Threshold that the test statistic is compared against to decide whether to reject H0H_0

What is the z-test statistic formula?

z=xˉμ0σnz = \frac{\bar{x} - \mu_0}{\frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}}

What is the decision rule using p-value?

Reject H0H_0 if p-value < significance level
