To change reader's mind or get them to agree with a viewpoint

Editorials, political speeches, adverts, opinion pieces

To guide through a process or give useful info to help

To increase knowledge/understanding about a topic

Textbooks, encyclopaedias, news reports, educational websites

To provide enjoyment and engage readers emotionally

Novels, short stories, comedy sketches, magazine features

Many texts combine several purposes, not just one

Look at language choices, tone, and overall approach

Usually makes purpose clear; deals with real-world topics

Entertainment is obvious, but may have additional goals
