What causes static electricity?

Build-up of charges not free to move

What moves when insulators rubbed together

Electrons

Charge of material that loses electrons

Positive

Charge of material that gains electrons

Negative

Polythene rod rubbed with cloth - charge on rod

Negative (gains electrons from cloth)

Interaction between opposite charges

Attract (electrostatic attraction)

Type of force: electrostatic attraction

Non-contact force

Interaction between like charges

Repel (electrostatic repulsion)

What is a spark?

Electrons jumping across a gap

Definition: earthed conductor

Material connected to the Earth

What creates electric fields?

Electrically charged objects

Electric field strength vs distance from charged object

Increases closer to object

Direction of electric field lines

From positive to negative charges
