Selective breeding
infoNote
Humans artificially select plants/animals for their desired characteristics that are selectively bred to create a population with their genes
Process:
- Choose animals/plants with the desired characteristics
- Breed those animals/plants
- Breed their offspring with the desired characteristics
- Continue process…
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| • Medical research uses • Creating high yields of products products by animals • Important in agriculture | • Reduces the gene pool – decreases the number of different alleles • Increased health problems – genetic defects • New diseases can increase the chance of death due to the lack of resistant alleles |
