What is Collision Theory?

Particles must collide for a reaction to occur

Requirements for particles to react

Enough energy and right direction

What is a successful collision?

Collision with enough energy to break bonds & form new ones

What determines rate of reaction?

Frequency of successful collisions

Effect of more frequent successful collisions

Faster reaction

What is Activation Energy?

Minimum energy needed for particles to react successfully

Describe activation energy as a barrier

Energy barrier that must be overcome for reaction to happen

What happens if particles lack enough energy?

They bounce off without reacting

Why are low activation energy reactions faster?

More particles have enough energy to collide successfully

Why are high activation energy reactions slower?

Fewer particles can overcome the energy barrier
