What are hydrocarbons?

Compounds made of only hydrogen and carbon atoms

Three key features of hydrocarbons

Boiling point, viscosity, flammability

Boiling point definition

Temperature at which substance changes from liquid to gas

Intermolecular forces in long-chain hydrocarbons

Strong

Long-chain hydrocarbons: boiling point

Higher boiling points

Short-chain hydrocarbons: boiling point

Lower boiling points

Boiling point of ethane (C2H6C_2H_6)

89°C-89°C

Boiling point of heptane (C7H16C_7H_{16})

98°C98°C

Viscosity definition

Resistance to flow or thickness of a liquid

Viscosity of larger hydrocarbons

Higher viscosity (thicker, flow less easily)

Flammability definition

How easily a hydrocarbon can combust

Flammability of smaller vs larger hydrocarbons

Smaller: more flammable; Larger: less flammable
