Plurals (Junior Cert German): Revision Notes
Plurals
Overview
German plurals work differently from English. While English typically adds "-s" to make a noun plural, German has 12 different ways to form plurals. Unlike English, you cannot simply apply one rule to all nouns - each German noun must be learned together with its specific plural form.
This fundamental difference makes German plurals one of the most challenging aspects for English speakers learning German. The key is to approach each noun as a unique case rather than trying to find universal patterns.
The golden rule
There is no universal rule for German plurals!
This might seem frustrating, but it's important to understand from the start. In German, you must learn each noun together with its plural form and article. When you encounter a new German word, always note how it forms its plural.
Article changes
All German plural nouns use the same article: die
- Masculine: der → die
- Feminine: die → die
- Neuter: das → die
Article Change Examples:
- der Junge → die Jungen (the boy → the boys)
- das Jahr → die Jahre (the year → the years)
- die Tür → die Türen (the door → the doors)
The 12 ways to form German plurals
Way 1: Add "-e"
Many nouns simply add "-e" to form the plural.
| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| der Schuh | die Schuhe | shoe/shoes |
| das Wort | die Worte | word/words |
| das Problem | die Probleme | problem/problems |
Way 2: Add "-n"
This ending is common with many nouns, particularly feminine ones.
| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| die Straße | die Straßen | street/streets |
| die Schule | die Schulen | school/schools |
| der Name | die Namen | name/names |
Way 3: Add "-s"
This method resembles English plurals and is often used with foreign words.

| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| das Ei | die Eier | egg/eggs |
| das Kind | die Kinder | child/children |
| der Geist | die Geister | ghost/ghosts |
Notice how "Kind" → "Kinder" shows both the "-er" ending and maintains the stem vowel, while other nouns in this category may also change their stem vowel.
Way 6: Add "-se"
This ending is used with certain types of nouns, particularly compound nouns.
| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| das Zeugnis | die Zeugnisse | school report/school reports |
| das Erlebnis | die Erlebnisse | experience/experiences |
| das Verhältnis | die Verhältnisse | relationship/relationships |

|---|---|---|
| die Freundin | die Freundinnen | friend/friends (female) |
| die Ärztin | die Ärztinnen | doctor/doctors (female) |
| die Studentin | die Studentinnen | student/students (female) |
Way 8: No change
Some nouns remain exactly the same in plural form.
| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| der Fehler | die Fehler | mistake/mistakes |
| der Schüler | die Schüler | pupil/pupils |
| das Fenster | die Fenster | window/windows |
Way 9: Change stem vowel (umlaut)
The vowel in the stem changes, but no ending is added.
| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| die Tochter | die Töchter | daughter/daughters |
| der Vater | die Väter | father/fathers |
| der Bruder | die Brüder | brother/brothers |
Way 10: Change stem vowel + add "-e"

| die Stadt | die Städte | city/cities |
| der Sohn | die Söhne | son/sons |
Way 11: Change stem vowel + add "-er"

| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| das Wort | die Wörter | word/words |
| der Mann | die Männer | man/men |
| das Buch | die Bücher | book/books |
Umlaut Pattern Example: Notice how "Mann" becomes "Männer" - the "a" becomes "ä" (umlaut) and "-er" is added. This double change is common in this category.
Way 12: Irregular changes
Some nouns change completely or in unpredictable ways.
| Singular | Plural | English |
|---|---|---|
| das Datum | die Daten | date/dates |
| der Bus | die Busse | bus/buses |

Common mistakes and tips
Mistake 1: Assuming one rule fits all
Don't try to apply English plural rules to German. Each noun has its own specific plural form that must be memorised.
Mistake 2: Forgetting article changes
Remember that all plural nouns use "die" as their article, regardless of their singular article (der, die, or das).
Mistake 3: Not learning plurals from the start
Always learn German nouns together with their plural forms. Write them as: der Mann, die Männer or das Kind, die Kinder.
Tip 1: Use vocabulary cards
When making vocabulary cards, always include both singular and plural forms with their articles.
Tip 2: Pay attention to patterns
While there's no universal rule, certain noun types often follow similar patterns. For example, many feminine nouns ending in "-e" add "-n" for the plural.
Tip 3: Practice with examples
The more you see and use different plural forms, the more natural they'll become.
