An Teaghlach (The Family)
- Máthair dhian – strict mother → Tá Máirín ina máthair dhian a bhfuil smacht aici ar gach rud.
(Máirín is a strict mother who controls everything.)
- Teannas sa teaghlach – family tension → Tá an-chuid teannas sa teaghlach seo faoi na roghanna atá Seán ag déanamh.
(There's a lot of tension in this family about Seán's decisions.)
- Comhbhá – sympathy / compassion → Tá comhbhá le Seán agus leis an saol atá os a chomhair.
(We feel sympathy for Seán and the life ahead of him.)
Coimhlint agus Tírghrá (Conflict and Patriotism)
- Ag iarraidh imeacht – wanting to leave → Tá Seán ag iarraidh imeacht chun páirt a ghlacadh sa chogadh.
(Seán wants to leave to take part in the war.)
- Ag cur i gcoinne – opposing → Tá Máirín ag cur i gcoinne gach rud atá Seán ag iarraidh a dhéanamh.
(Máirín is opposing everything Seán wants to do.)
- Tírghrá – patriotism → Léiríonn Seán tírghrá agus dúil sa cheartas.
(Seán shows patriotism and a sense of justice.)
- An Eigeandáil – The Emergency (WWII in Ireland) → Tá an dráma suite le linn na hEigeandála.
(The play is set during The Emergency.)
Éalú agus Saol sa Tuaithe (Escape and Rural Life)
- Ceantar iargúlta – remote area → Tá an teaghlach ina gcónaí i gceantar iargúlta faoin tuath.
(The family lives in a remote rural area.)
- Saol traidisiúnta – traditional life → Tá saol traidisiúnta ag an teaghlach, le rialacha soiléire.
(The family lives a traditional life with strict rules.)
- Féinriail / Saoirse phearsanta – self-rule / personal freedom → Tá Seán ag lorg saoirse phearsanta agus seans chun fás.
(Seán is looking for personal freedom and a chance to grow.)
Carachtair agus Mothúcháin (Characters & Emotions)
- Smachtúil – controlling → Tá Máirín an-smachtúil ina ról mar mháthair.
(Máirín is very controlling in her role as a mother.)
- Cliste / Réasúnach – clever / reasonable → Tá Eilís níos réasúnaí ná Máirín uaireanta.
(Eilís is more reasonable than Máirín at times.)
- Frustrachas / Iarraidh éalaithe – frustration / attempt to escape → Tá frustrachas le brath ar Sheán agus é ag iarraidh éalú.
(You can sense frustration in Seán as he tries to escape.)
Teanga don Scrúdú (Phrases for the Exam)
- Is dráma mothúchánach é seo. This is an emotional drama.
- Léirítear coimhlint idir glúnta. A conflict between generations is shown.
- Feicimid dílseacht agus briseadh croí. We see loyalty and heartbreak.
- Bhain an dráma geit / tuiscint / trua asam. The drama shocked me / gave me insight / made me feel pity.
