Introduction to ‘Na Deoraithe’ (Junior Cert Irish): Revision Notes

Elena Elena is the mother of the family who has moved to Ireland to escape the war in Ukraine. She is strong, practical, and protective. She tries to keep things together for the sake of her children, but we see the strain she's under as she adjusts to a new life while worrying about her husband.

Nikolai Nikolai is Elena's husband who stayed behind in Ukraine. Although he doesn't appear directly in the play until the very end, his presence looms large. He represents the past life and trauma they are trying to escape—and the danger that continues to follow them.

Katya Katya is the teenage daughter of Elena and Nikolai. She's intelligent, independent, and sometimes frustrated by her family's situation. She struggles to adjust to her new life in Ireland and often disagrees with her mother.

Vlad Vlad is Katya's younger brother. He's cheerful, energetic, and innocent. He tries to make the best of their situation and loves things like action movies and sweets. He brings lightness to the family despite their circumstances.

Mamó Mamó is Elena's mother and a strong influence in the family. She supports her daughter but also challenges her decisions. Mamó often represents the old ways and the pain of leaving home behind.

Daidí Katya Although he only appears briefly, Katya's father (Nikolai) is central to the ending. His sudden arrival brings shock, fear, and tragedy—changing the family forever and reminding the audience that trauma can follow you, even when you flee.
