Health-Related Fitness
Components of Health-Related Fitness

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not simply the absence of disease.
Health-related fitness encompasses five components that are crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. These components contribute to overall fitness and enable individuals to perform daily activities with ease and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Components of health-related fitness:
- Cardiorespiratory Endurance
- Muscular Endurance
- Muscular Strength
- Flexibility
- Body Composition
1. Cardiorespiratory Endurance
Cardiorespiratory endurance or stamina is the body's ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles over a sustained period of physical activity.
The circulatory system (the heart, blood, blood vessels) and the respiratory system (the lungs and airways) must work together efficiently to provide enough oxygen to the working muscles.
- Long distance running and tour cycling require high levels of cardiorespiratory endurance.
- Everyday tasks such as climbing stairs also require a basic level of cardiorespiratory endurance.
2. Muscular Endurance
Muscular Endurance is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to generate force repeatedly without fatiguing. It allows muscles to perform repetitive contractions over extended periods.
- Sports such as football (repeated running and kicking) require muscular endurance.
- Everyday tasks such as carrying shopping bags require muscular endurance.
3. Muscular Strength
Muscular Strength is the amount of force a muscle can produce with a single maximal effort.
- Strength is needed for sports such as weightlifting, athletic jumps and sprinting.
- Strength is important for bodily health as it reduces the risk of injury and promotes proper posture.
4. Flexibility
Flexibility is the range of motion available at a joint.
- Flexibility is important for preventing muscles becoming stiff and injured.
- It is needed for daily tasks such as stretching to reach something on a shelf.
- Sports such as gymnastics and diving require high levels of flexibility.
5. Body Composition
Body Composition is the percentage of body weight which is fat, muscle or bone.
Body composition is an important indicator of health and fitness level. Maintaining a healthy body composition supports optimal performance.
- Body fat percentage and BMI (body mass index) are used as measurements of body composition.
- A healthy percentage of body fat should be maintained as excess body fat contributes to health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
