Show

Critical angle

Angle where refracted ray travels parallel to boundary (refraction = 90°90°)

Medium direction for critical angle

Denser to rarer medium

Total internal reflection

Light completely reflected back into first medium

Conditions for total internal reflection

Denser to rarer medium & angle >> critical angle

Formula: critical angle from refractive index

sin⁡C=1n\sin C = \frac{1}{n}

Formula: refractive index from critical angle

n=1sin⁡Cn = \frac{1}{\sin C}

Higher refractive index effect on critical angle

Smaller critical angle

Angle of refraction at critical angle

90°90°

Light energy lost in total internal reflection

None - no light energy is lost

When TIR never occurs (medium direction)

Rarer to denser medium

Snell's Window

Circular region underwater showing compressed above-water view

Refractive index of water

43\frac{4}{3} or approximately 1.33

Prism refractive index requirement for TIR

n>1.414n > 1.414
