Endotherms

Organisms maintaining constant body temp via internal heat

Endotherms vs ectotherms heat source

Endotherms: internal metabolism; Ectotherms: external sources

Three types of adaptations

Behavioural, structural, physiological

Thermoregulation

Control of body temperature

How insulation reduces heat loss

Traps air layer close to skin

SA:V ratio in cold environments

Small SA:V - less surface area for heat loss

SA:V ratio in hot environments

Large SA:V - more surface area for heat loss

Evaporative cooling mechanism

Water evaporation removes heat energy from body

Vasodilation

Blood vessels widen, increasing blood flow to skin for heat loss

Countercurrent exchange function

Heat transfer from arterial to venous blood, reducing heat loss
