Definition of work in physics

Energy transferred by a force causing movement

Type of quantity: work

Scalar (has magnitude, can be +ve or -ve)

Formula for work

W=FscosθW = Fs \cos\theta

Unit for work

Joules (J)

Work when θ=90°\theta = 90° (force perpendicular)

Zero

Work when θ=180°\theta = 180° (force opposite)

Negative work (cos180°=1\cos 180° = -1, so W=FsW = -Fs)

Positive work means

Energy transferred to object (increases kinetic energy)

Negative work means

Energy removed from object (decreases kinetic energy)

Work when displacement = 0

Zero (no work done)
