Calculating Moments (AQA GCSE Physics): Revision Notes
5.4.2 Calculating Moments
Examples: Calculating Moments Question 1: Two masses are placed on a surface on a pivot. The surface is balanced. Calculate the distance 𝑥.

The question says the surface is balanced. Therefore we know that the moments should be equal: Total anticlockwise moment = Total clockwise moment
We can rearrange this equation:
Question 2: What is the moment of a 4N downward force acting 0.4m from a pivot? 1. Draw a diagram.
To tackle this question, we should start off by drawing a diagram.

2. Look at the formula.
Now that we have a visual representation, we can see that our force is perpendicular to the distance we were given. Now we can use our formula:
3. Substitute in the numbers.
Once we have put the numbers into the equation, we should get our answer.
