Equation of circle with centre (h,k)(h, k) and radius rr

(x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2

Distance dd from (h,k)(h, k) to point (x,y)(x, y)

d=(x−h)2+(y−k)2d = \sqrt{(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2}

Condition for point ON the circle

(x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2 or d=rd = r

Condition for point INSIDE the circle

(x−h)2+(y−k)2<r2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 < r^2 or d<rd < r

Condition for point OUTSIDE the circle

(x−h)2+(y−k)2>r2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 > r^2 or d>rd > r

Method to determine point position relative to circle

Substitute coordinates into equation and compare with r2r^2

What to compare to determine point position?

Compare (x−h)2+(y−k)2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 with r2r^2

If (x−h)2+(y−k)2=5(x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = 5 and r2=5r^2 = 5, point position?

On the circle

If (x−h)2+(y−k)2=3(x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = 3 and r2=8r^2 = 8, point position?

Inside the circle

If (x−h)2+(y−k)2=10(x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = 10 and r2=6r^2 = 6, point position?

Outside the circle
