Show

Proper time (t0t_0) definition

Time when events occur at same point in space (shortest)

Dilated time (tt) definition

Time when events occur at different points in space (longer)

Time dilation formula

t=γt0t = \gamma t_0 or t=t01v2c2t = \frac{t_0}{\sqrt{1-\frac{v^2}{c^2}}}

Lorentz factor (γ\gamma)

γ=11v2c2\gamma = \frac{1}{\sqrt{1-\frac{v^2}{c^2}}}

Proper length (L0L_0) definition

Length measured at rest relative to object (longest)

Length contraction formula

L=L0γL = \frac{L_0}{\gamma} or L=L01v2c2L = L_0\sqrt{1-\frac{v^2}{c^2}}

Is proper time or dilated time longer?

Dilated time is longer; proper time is shortest

Is proper length or contracted length longer?

Proper length is longer; contracted length is shorter

Direction of length contraction

Only in the direction of motion

Evidence for time dilation (1971 experiment)

Hafele-Keating atomic clock flights around world
