Reflection definition

Wave changes direction at surface, returns to same medium

Law of reflection

Angle of incidence = angle of reflection (from normal)

Refraction definition

Wave bends entering new medium due to speed change

Refractive index formula

n=cvn = \frac{c}{v} (c=vacuum speed, v=medium speed)

Snell's law

n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2n_1 \sin \theta_1 = n_2 \sin \theta_2

Critical angle formula

sinθc=n2n1\sin \theta_c = \frac{n_2}{n_1} where n1>n2n_1 > n_2

Light entering slower medium direction

Bends toward the normal

Total internal reflection conditions

High to low n, angle ≥ critical angle

Speed of light in vacuum/air

c=3.00×108c = 3.00 \times 10^8 m/s

Property constant across medium boundary

Frequency
