Osmosis definition

Movement of water molecules from higher to lower water potential through a selectively permeable membrane

Symbol for water potential

Psi (ψψ)

Water potential of pure water

0 kPa

Effect of adding solute to water potential

Lowers it/makes it negative

Hypotonic solution

Higher external water potential than inside cell

Isotonic solution

Equal water potential inside and outside cell

Hypertonic solution

Lower external water potential than inside cell

Haemolysis

Bursting of red blood cells in hypotonic solution

Turgid plant cell

Swollen cell, protoplast presses against cell wall

Plasmolysis

Protoplast shrinks away from cell wall due to water loss
