3 characteristics of reflex actions

Involuntary, rapid, protective

5 stages of reflex arc

Stimulus→Receptor→Coordinator→Effector→Response

Response characteristic in reflex arc

Always identical for a given stimulus

Knee-jerk reflex coordinator

Spinal cord

Unique feature of knee-jerk reflex

No relay neurone; only one synapse

Why reflexes are rapid

Minimal synapses = fewer delays in signal transmission

Blinking reflex coordinator

Medulla oblongata (in brain)

Blinking reflex effector muscles

Superior levator palpebrae & orbicularis oculi
