Strength (material property)

Ability to resist forces without breaking or failing

Five main types of strength

Tensile, compressive, shear, bending, torsional

Tensile strength

Resistance to being pulled apart

Compressive strength

Resistance to being squashed or compressed

Shear strength

Resistance to sliding forces acting parallel to surface

Bending strength

Resistance to forces that try to bend material

Torsional strength

Resistance to twisting forces

Hardness

Resistance to surface damage (scratching, indentation, wear)

Ductility

Can be stretched & drawn into thinner sections without breaking

Malleability

Can be hammered, rolled, or pressed into shapes without cracking

Toughness

Ability to absorb energy from impacts without fracturing

Brittleness

Fractures easily under impact with little or no warning

Elasticity

Returns to original shape after deforming force is removed

Elastic limit

Beyond this, material becomes permanently deformed

Conductivity

How easily heat, electricity, or sound flows through material
