Articles (Junior Cert Spanish): Revision Notes
Spanish articles
Overview
Articles are small words that come before nouns to tell us if we're talking about something specific or general. In Spanish, articles must always match the gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) of the noun they accompany.
This agreement system is essential for clear communication and correct Spanish grammar. Unlike English, where "the" never changes, Spanish articles must constantly adapt to match their nouns.
Rules & formation
Spanish has two types of articles: definite articles (equivalent to "the" in English) and indefinite articles (equivalent to "a", "an", or "some" in English). Both types change their form depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural.
Definite articles
These refer to specific things that both the speaker and listener know about.
Indefinite articles
These refer to non-specific things or introduce something new into the conversation.
Table of key forms
Definite articles
| Gender | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | el (the) | los (the) |
| Feminine | la (the) | las (the) |
Indefinite articles
| Gender | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | un (a/an) | unos (some) |
| Feminine | una (a/an) | unas (some) |
Special rule for feminine nouns
When a feminine noun starts with a stressed "a" sound, use the masculine articles el and un instead of la and una. However, the noun remains feminine, so plural forms use las and unas.
This rule exists to avoid the awkward sound of two "a" sounds together (like "la agua" would create).
Examples of the Special "A" Rule:
- el agua (the water) → las aguas (the waters)
- un águila (an eagle) → unas águilas (some eagles)
- el alma (the soul) → las almas (the souls)
- un arma (a weapon) → unas armas (some weapons)
Example sentences

Special rule examples
Worked Examples: Special "A" Rule in Action
El agua está fría.
The water is cold.
Although agua is feminine, we use el because it starts with a stressed "a".
Un ave canta.
A bird sings.
Although ave is feminine, we use un because it starts with a stressed "a".
Common mistakes & tips
Mistake 1: Forgetting gender agreement
Gender Mismatch Error:
❌ La carro (incorrect - carro is masculine)
✅ El carro (correct)
Always remember that the article must match the noun's gender, not what seems logical based on meaning.
Mistake 2: Forgetting number agreement
Number Mismatch Error:
❌ El carros (incorrect - carros is plural)
✅ Los carros (correct)
When a noun is plural, the article must also be plural.
Mistake 3: Not applying the special rule
Special Rule Oversight:
❌ La agua (incorrect - should be el agua)
✅ El agua (correct)
Don't forget the special rule for feminine nouns starting with stressed "a"!
Top Tips for Success:
- Always check if your article matches the noun's gender and number
- Remember that el agua and similar words are still feminine (they become las aguas in plural)
- When in doubt about gender, learn the article together with the noun
- Practice listening for the stressed "a" sound in feminine nouns

Key Points to Remember:
- Spanish articles must always agree in gender and number with their nouns
- Definite articles (el, la, los, las) = "the" and refer to specific things
- Indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas) = "a/an/some" and refer to non-specific things
- Feminine nouns starting with stressed "a" use masculine articles (el/un) but remain feminine
- Learn nouns together with their articles to avoid gender mistakes
