What do chemical formulae show?

Composition of compounds: which elements present and in what ratios

Polyatomic ions definition

Groups of atoms that carry a charge and act as a single unit

When is relative molecular mass used?

For covalent compounds that form discrete molecules

When is formula mass used?

For ionic compounds that form crystal lattices

How do covalent compounds form?

Atoms share electrons to form molecules

What structure do ionic compounds form?

Crystals with repeating lattice structures

Formula and charge of ammonium ion

NH4+NH_4^+

Formula and charge of sulphate ion

SO42−SO_4^{2-}

Formula and charge of carbonate ion

CO32−CO_3^{2-}

When to use brackets in formulae?

When a polyatomic ion appears more than once, e.g. (NH4)2SO4(NH_4)_2SO_4
