What categorical data describes

Characteristics or qualities, not quantities

Nominal data definition

Labels with no particular order or ranking

Ordinal data definition

Labels that indicate a specific order or ranking

Key difference: ordinal vs nominal

Ordinal has sequence/hierarchy, nominal does not

Quantities used for mathematical calculations

Discrete data definition

Exact, specific numerical values from counting

Continuous data definition

Any numerical value within a range from measuring
