What are measures of central tendency?

Statistical values describing the centre/typical value of a dataset

Symbol for population mean

μ\mu (mu)

Symbol for sample mean

x\overline{x} (x-bar)

Formula for mean (ungrouped data)

x=xn\overline{x} = \frac{\sum x}{n}

Formula for mean from grouped data

x=fxf\overline{x} = \frac{\sum fx}{\sum f}

Definition of median

The middle value when data is arranged in order

How to find median with even number of scores

Average the n2\frac{n}{2} and (n2+1)\left(\frac{n}{2} + 1\right) scores

Definition of mode

The value that appears most frequently in a dataset

What is bimodal data?

Data with two modes

Is mean from grouped data exact or approximate?

Approximate (uses class centres not actual scores)
