Practise the cards

10 cards from this deck

Show

First order differential equation

Equation with only first derivative like dydx\frac{dy}{dx}

Separating variables method

Rearrange: all xx terms one side, all yy terms other side

When to use integrating factor

When equation cannot be separated into distinct xx & yy terms

Exact equation

Left side recognised as derivative of a product

Standard form for integrating factor

dydx+P(x)y=f(x)\frac{dy}{dx} + P(x)y = f(x)

Integrating factor formula

eP(x)dxe^{\int P(x)dx}

General solution

Solution with constant cc, represents family of curves

Particular solution

Solution with specific cc from initial conditions

Standard form: coefficient of dydx\frac{dy}{dx}

Must equal 1

Purpose of substitution

Transform complex equation into simpler, solvable form
