LAN

Local Area Network - connects devices to communicate & share

Two types of LAN transmission media

Wired (cables) and wireless (Wi-Fi signals)

Wired network installation complexity

Challenging - each device needs dedicated cable

Wireless network installation ease

Simple - only WAPs need cables, devices use SSID & password

Wired network flexibility

Rigid - devices stuck in location, moving requires new cables

Wireless network mobility

Devices move freely within coverage area

Wired network range per cable segment

Up to 100 metres

Wired network maximum bandwidth

Up to 10 Gbps per connection (dedicated pathway)

Wireless network maximum bandwidth

Up to 3.2 Gbps (shared amongst all devices)

Latency

Delay between sending and receiving data

Wired network security advantage

Physically hard to intercept - must access cable directly

Wireless network security issue

Vulnerable - anyone in signal range can intercept transmissions

Mixed network

Combines wired & wireless connections strategically

Router role in mixed networks

Assigns internal IP address to each device
