What is a wave?

Periodic, continuous disturbance consisting of train of pulses

Define transverse wave

Particle motion perpendicular to wave propagation direction

What is a crest?

Highest point; maximum upward displacement from equilibrium

What is a trough?

Lowest point; maximum downward displacement from equilibrium

Net displacement of particles in a wave

None; particles return to equilibrium position

Angle between particle & wave motion in transverse wave

90° (perpendicular)

Difference between pulse and wave

Pulse is single disturbance; wave is train of pulses

What is equilibrium position?

Where medium would be if no wave was passing through

Direction of particle motion in transverse wave

Perpendicular (at right angle) to wave direction

Does wave itself have net displacement?

Yes; energy travels through the medium
