Show

What is an index?

How many times a number is multiplied by itself

What is the base?

The number being multiplied

Product rule for indices

am×an=am+na^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}

Quotient rule for indices

am÷an=amna^m \div a^n = a^{m-n}

Power of a power rule

(am)n=amn(a^m)^n = a^{mn}

Power of a product rule

(ab)n=an×bn(ab)^n = a^n \times b^n

What does ana^{-n} equal?

1an\frac{1}{a^n} (reciprocal)

What does a1/na^{1/n} represent?

an\sqrt[n]{a} (the nth root of a)

In am/na^{m/n}, what does denominator tell?

Which root to take

When do index laws apply?

When bases are the same
