Excretory system definition

Organs & tissues removing waste, maintaining water/ion balance

Three main types of waste produced by cells

Carbon dioxide, toxins, nitrogenous waste

Deamination process in liver

NH2\text{NH}_2 removed from amino acids → NH3\text{NH}_3 → urea

Urea

Main nitrogenous waste from protein breakdown in mammals

Urinary tract flow path (order)

Kidneys → Ureters → Bladder → Urethra

Nephron

Functional unit of kidney where filtration & urine form

Three key processes in nephron

Filtration, Reabsorption, Secretion

Bowman's capsule function

Filtration - collects filtered blood from glomerulus

Loop of Henle main function

Reabsorbs water via osmosis using concentration gradient

Dark yellow urine indicates

Dehydration - kidneys conserving water, concentrated urine
