Metal displacement reaction definition

Redox reaction where one metal displaces another from ion solution

Reactivity series definition

Ranked list of metals by reactivity/reducing agent ability

Least reactive metal in series

Gold (Au) at the top

Most reactive metals in series

Potassium (K) and lithium (Li) at the bottom

Rule for predicting displacement reactions

Metal must be below the metal ion in the reactivity series

Location of strongest reducing agents

Bottom right of series (most reactive metals)

Location of strongest oxidising agents

Top left of series (metal cations)

Role of more reactive metal in displacement

Reducing agent (donates electrons, becomes oxidised)

Observable: Cu wire in AgNO3\text{AgNO}_3 solution

Silver crystals deposit; solution turns blue (Cu2+\text{Cu}^{2+} ions)

Observable: Zn in copper sulfate solution

Brown Cu deposit forms; blue solution becomes colourless
