Types of triangles for sine & cosine rules

Any triangle (not just right-angled)

Letters for triangle sides

Lowercase: a, b, c

Letters for triangle angles

Uppercase: A, B, C

Side opposite to angle A

Side a

Sine rule formula

asinA=bsinB=csinC\frac{a}{\sin A} = \frac{b}{\sin B} = \frac{c}{\sin C}

Cosine rule for finding a side

a2=b2+c22bccosAa^2 = b^2 + c^2 - 2bc \cos A

Cosine rule for finding an angle

cosA=b2+c2a22bc\cos A = \frac{b^2 + c^2 - a^2}{2bc}

Area with 2 sides & included angle

Area = 12absinC\frac{1}{2}ab \sin C

When to use sine rule

2 angles & any side OR 2 sides & angle not between

When to use cosine rule

2 sides & enclosed angle OR all 3 sides
