Show

pH scale purpose

Measures acidity/basicity of a solution

Kw value at 25°C

1.00×10141.00 \times 10^{-14} M2^2

Self-ionisation of water

Water molecules reacting with each other to form ions

Amphiprotic nature of water

Water acts as both acid and base

Ion conc. in neutral soln at 25°C

[H3O+]=[OH]=107[\text{H}_3\text{O}^+] = [\text{OH}^-] = 10^{-7} M

Acidic solution ion conc. at 25°C

[H3O+]>107[\text{H}_3\text{O}^+] > 10^{-7} M

Basic solution ion conc. at 25°C

[OH]>107[\text{OH}^-] > 10^{-7} M

pH formula

pH=log10[H3O+]\text{pH} = -\log_{10}[\text{H}_3\text{O}^+]

pH classifications at 25°C

Neutral = 7, acidic < 7, basic > 7

pH scale logarithmic property

Each unit = 10× change in [H3O+][\text{H}_3\text{O}^+]
