What do waves transfer?

Energy (not matter)

How particles move in a wave

Vibrate around fixed point, don't move along with wave

Direction of vibrations in transverse waves

Perpendicular to wave direction

Examples of transverse waves

EM waves, S-waves, water ripples

Direction of vibrations in longitudinal waves

Parallel to wave direction

Examples of longitudinal waves

Sound waves, P-waves

Features of longitudinal waves

Compressions and rarefactions

Amplitude definition

Maximum displacement from rest position

Wavelength definition

Distance between corresponding points on adjacent waves

Frequency definition

Number of complete cycles per second

Unit of frequency

Hertz (Hz)

What 1 Hz equals

1 wave per second

Period definition

Time for one full wave cycle

Wave speed equation

v=fλv = f \lambda (speed = frequency × wavelength)

Period equation

T=1fT = \frac{1}{f} (period = 1/frequency)
