Definition of similar shapes

Same form/shape but different sizes

First condition for similarity

Corresponding angles must be equal

Second condition for similarity

Corresponding sides must be proportional

Scale factor formula

k=2nd shape1st shapek = \frac{\text{2nd shape}}{\text{1st shape}}

Scale factor > 1 means

Scaling up (making shape larger)

Scale factor < 1 means

Scaling down (making shape smaller)

Area scale factor when length scales by kk

k2k^2 (k squared)

Method to find unknown side in similar triangles

Set up proportion equation using corresponding sides

If length scale factor is 5, area scale factor is

52=255^2 = 25

Ratio 6:36:3 and 4:24:2 both simplify to

2:12:1 (confirms proportional sides)
