Show

Angle of elevation

Angle from horizontal upward to view object above

Angle of depression

Angle from horizontal downward to view object below

Relation: angle of elevation & depression

They are equal (alternate angles)

Why angle of elevation = angle of depression

Alternate angles on parallel horizontal lines

Range of elevation/depression angles

0° to 90°90°

Tangent ratio formula

tanθ=oppositeadjacent\tan \theta = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{adjacent}}

Sine ratio formula

sinθ=oppositehypotenuse\sin \theta = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}}

When to use tan ratio

Know or need opposite and adjacent sides

When to use sin ratio

Know or need opposite side and hypotenuse

Two-triangle problem strategy

Solve one triangle first for common side, then use in second
