Linear model

Situation where one quantity changes at a constant rate

Standard form of linear equation

y=mx+cy = mx + c

mm in y=mx+cy = mx + c

Gradient (rate of change)

cc in y=mx+cy = mx + c

Y-intercept (starting value)

Cost function

Linear model showing how total costs depend on quantity

Fixed costs in cost function

Constant amount that doesn't change (y-intercept)

Variable costs in cost function

Amount that increases with each unit (gradient × quantity)

Positive gradient in distance-time graph

Moving away from reference point (distance increasing)

Negative gradient in distance-time graph

Moving towards reference point (distance decreasing)

Magnitude of gradient in distance-time graph

Speed (always positive)
