- Cereals are the edible grains of cultivated (grown for sale) grasses.
- They are cheap to grow and versatile in cooking (e.g., baking, thickening sauces, soups).
- Cereals are a staple food around the world.
- A staple food is a basic food eaten regularly in large amounts, providing most of a population's energy and nutrients (e.g. rice, potatoes, maize).
- They provide a major source of carbohydrates in the diet.
