Total area definition

Sum of all regions regardless of position relative to xx-axis

Signed area definition

Area accounting for regions above (+) and below (-) xx-axis

Sign of area above xx-axis

Positive

Sign of area below xx-axis

Negative

What does abf(x)dx\int_a^b f(x)dx give?

Signed area, not total area

Area when f(x)0f(x) \geq 0 on [a,b][a,b]

abf(x)dx\int_a^b f(x)dx

Area when f(x)0f(x) \leq 0 on [a,b][a,b]

abf(x)dx-\int_a^b f(x)dx

Why negate integral when f(x)0f(x) \leq 0?

Integral gives negative value; area must be positive

abf(x)dx=baf(x)dx\int_a^b f(x)dx = -\int_b^a f(x)dx

Reversing limits property

abkf(x)dx\int_a^b kf(x)dx

kabf(x)dxk\int_a^b f(x)dx
