Terms with the same variable parts

Multiply term outside by each term inside

Changes sign of every term inside when expanded

Add the powers

$ac + ad + bc + bd$

$a^2 + 2ab + b^2$

Square first, square last, twice the product in between

$a^2 - b^2$

The middle terms cancel out

Each term in first bracket multiplies each term in second
