Measure of spread

Quantifies how spread out/variable data values are

Three main measures of spread

Range, interquartile range (IQR), standard deviation

Formula for range RR

R=extlargestvalueextsmallestvalueR = ext{largest value} - ext{smallest value}

Main limitation of range

Heavily influenced by extreme values/outliers

What does IQR measure?

Spread of middle 50% of observations

Formula for IQR

extIQR=Q3Q1 ext{IQR} = Q_3 - Q_1

What % of observations are below Q1Q_1?

25%

What % of observations are below Q3Q_3?

75%

What does standard deviation measure?

Spread of data around the mean

Why square deviations in std dev formula?

Regular deviations always sum to zero
