Method: acid + insoluble base

Used to make soluble salts

Why heat acid in fume cupboard?

Avoid inhaling fumes & speed reaction

When to stop adding base (Method 1)

When base in excess (no more reacts)

Remove excess base how?

Filter using filter paper & funnel

Obtain salt crystals from solution

Heat to evaporate, cool, crystallise, filter, dry

Method: acid + alkali (soluble base)

Titration (Method 2)

Why not add excess alkali?

Alkali & salt both soluble; would contaminate

Measure acid volume with?

Pipette

Add alkali gradually with?

Burette

End point in titration

When indicator changes colour (neutralisation)

Why repeat without indicator?

To make pure salt (avoid contamination)

Why not universal indicator?

Colour change too gradual

Phenolphthalein: alkaline → neutral

Pink → colourless

Methyl orange: acidic → neutral

Red → yellow

H2SO4H_2SO_4 + CuOCuO

CuSO4CuSO_4 + H2OH_2O
